When we were in Japan, Hanano-san (from SAORI Hiroshima) asked me if I had ever made a t-shirt with cut-outs and SAORI weaving showing through. No, I hadn’t. They had some kits there with a t-shirt and a piece of SAORI weaving and so I was going to buy one. She so generously offered it to me as a gift and asked that I make one, take a picture and send it to her.
So I have made it - and here are the photos:
“A Pocket full of Dragonflies”
(click on each image for a larger view)
Here is the whole shirt. The fabric had a fringe and I wanted to leave that on, so I thought it would work well at the bottom of the shirt as a pocket.
I love dragonflies, as anyone who has been to my house or cottage would know, and so I decided to put them on the shoulder of my shirt. The first one was a little too high as my hair often covers it, so I put another one lower.
Then to tie it all together, I realized that the pocket was full of dragonflies and one more was coming out to lead your eye up to the ones on the shoulder.
Thank you Hanano-san! I had fun creating this and I have had some great comments about it.
Also, I have a new idea of possibilites for small pieces of woven fabric as at one of my hands-on demos, someone wanted to weave a “pocket”!

Thanks Dee! Actually, I started by putting the first one on my shoulder and it was a bit too high, and so the story of the ‘Pocket full of dragonflies’ developed from there.
It was great to have a challenge of making something from fabric that someone else created!

I’m so glad that you like it Noreen - thanks!
I had seen other t-shirts made this way with Saori fabric, but had never tried it myself. Now that I have - yes, I will be making more….the possibilities are endless…
